Gameweek 21 defenders have seen the last two weeks fly by. Gameweek 19 and 20 were a blur, and the fixtures are piling up.
Do the usual suspects make the gameweek 21 defenders list or will someone new crack our list?
Charlie Daniels – Bournemouth
Games: 18; Clean sheets: 6; Total FPL points: 88
Charlie Daniels returns to our list as one of the top players to draft. Daniels is in great form. The defender scored 12 points against Swansea and 11 versus Arsenal during the holiday period.
He is a perfect player for your gameweek 21 defenders. Hull, Watford and Crystal Palace are up next. Oh, Daniels is only going to cost you £5.1 million.
Gary Cahill – Chelsea
Games: 19; Clean sheets: 11; Total FPL points: 96
Gary Cahill continues to collect points each gameweek. The Chelsea defender is thriving while teammates Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have fallen slightly.
Get Cahill in as one of your gameweek 21 defenders. You won’t regret it.
Leighton Baines – Everton
Games: 14; Clean sheets: 4; Total FPL points: 72
Leighton Baines has failed to make our defenders list due to poor form and injury this term.
Suddenly, the Englishman has risen up the Fantasy Premier League defenders’ chart. His 15 point gameweek 20 performance against Southampton was his best single-game total yet.
He makes the gameweek 21 defenders list despite Everton playing Manchester City. After that, Everton see five easy fixtures come their way: Crystal Palace, Stoke, Bournemouth, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
Gareth McAuley – West Brom Albion
Games: 20; Clean sheets: 3; Total FPL points: 72
Gareth McAuley is one of our favourite defenders at FantasySports.co.uk. Although he doesn’t contribute many clean sheets, McAuley adds to the team in other ways.
To be fair, gameweek 20 was his best points performance in some time. A goal and complete game helped him tally eight points.
At £4.9m, he is a cheap option. However, adding him to your gameweek 21 defenders could be a bit premature. West Brom face Spurs next. After that, things ease up for the Baggies.
Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea
Games: 19; Clean sheets: 11; Total FPL points: 96
A couple bad games shouldn’t put you off Azpilicueta. There is a reason he has been FPL’s best defender this term.
The Spaniard has been consistent all year long and the hectic holiday schedule could be getting to him. But we expect Azpilicueta to bounce back as one of your gameweek 21 defenders.
Bonus goalkeeper
David De Gea – Manchester United
Games: 20; Clean sheets: 7; Total FPL points: 71
David De Gea continued his strong FPL season with his seventh clean sheet in gameweek 20. Next up for Manchester United is Liverpool. The Reds arrive at Old Trafford on the back of a draw to Sunderland.
The last time the two sides met, De Gea’s eight point performance led United to a clean sheet draw against the Reds.
Based on both clubs’ current form, a similar result looks on the cards.
