The FA Cup’s fifth round featured two lower league sides, Millwall and Lincoln City, going through to the FA Cup sixth round. Meanwhile, Huddersfield have the opportunity to upset Premier League side Manchester City as the two sides face a replay at the Etihad Stadium on February 28th.
The biggest winners of the weekend were Lincoln City as the National League side knocked off Premier League club Burnley 1-0. The Imps went toe to toe with Burnley for the entire fixture and got the 89th minute winner courtesy of Sean Raggett’s header. Lincoln City have it all to do again as the team will play Arsenal in the FA Cup sixth round.
Speaking of Arsenal, the Gunners dispatched non-league team Sutton United 2-0 on Monday night. Arsenal never seemed to get out of first gear, but the team never really had to against Sutton. Lucas Perez opened the scoring in the 27th minute while Theo Walcott doubled the score just before the hour mark. Arsenal will host their FA Cup sixth round tie against Lincoln at the Emirates.
Middlesbrough are through to the FA Cup sixth round after a scare from Oxford. Middlesbrough lead 2-0 after 34 minutes thanks to goals from Grant Leadbitter and Rudy Gestede. However, Oxford stormed back, levelling the match on 65 minutes after Antonio Martinez’s goal. The match looked headed toward a replay until Cristhian Stuani struck past Oxford’s goalkeeper Simon Eastwood. Middlesbrough will host the winner of Manchester City versus Huddersfield.
Leicester City’s season continues to go from bad to worse as the Foxes lost to Millwall 1-0. Shaun Cummings 90th minute strike gave the Lions the win and the team will battle Tottenham at White Hart Lane in the FA Cup sixth round.
Tottenham had the easiest weekend as Spurs crushed Fulham 3-0. Harry Kane’s hat-trick was more than enough to see Spurs into the round of eight as Fulham never looked capable of stopping the North Londoners.
Chelsea avoided an upset at Molineux, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0. The match could have been so much different as Wolves nearly took a shock lead in the fourth minute when George Saville’s strike came back off the post. It took Chelsea nearly half an hour, but the team finally eased into the fixture.
However, it took until the 64th minute for the Blues to final breakdown Wolves. Pedro’s header gave Chelsea the lead and Antonio Conte’s men shut up shop after the goal. Diego Costa added a second in the 88th minute to see Chelsea into the FA Cup sixth round.
The Blues will play host to Manchester United in the next round as the Red Devils escaped a tricky tie at Ewood Park. Blackburn took the early lead through a Danny Graham strike in the 17th minute. However, Marcus Rashford levelled just 10 minutes later as United finally got a foothold in the fixture. Blackburn held firm until Paul Pogba’s pass set up Zlatan Ibramhimovic’s 75th minute winner.
