Manchester United to break own transfer record in player swoop

Manchester United are lining up a sensational deal that will see them, if successful, shatter their own transfer record, by looking to land French flying winger Thomas Lemar from Monaco for around £100 million.

United’s current transfer record stands at £89 million, which they famously paid Juventus for ex-United player Paul Pogba and, ironically, it is Pogba, that, as with Romelu Lukaku’s arrival from Everton, is helping United land their man after missing out on Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan. Pogba has struck up a friendship with Lemar and has sent him Instagram messages suggesting he is brokering a deal to bring Lemar to Old Trafford.

Lemar is currently injured with a thigh problem, and this kept him out of Monaco’s squad as they drew 1-1 against Leipzig of Germany. However, the Monaco squad played well, and this encouraging performance despite the absence of Lemar may well make them more amenable to an approach in January – with United ready to break the bank to land the player, who was the subject of plenty of transfer attention over the summer from Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, a Manchester United approach is a much different proposition and with Pogba available to encourage Lemar into joining the Red Devils, it may just become much more of a possibility, with the player seemingly disinterested in joining Arsenal.

United boss Jose Mourinho is already on record as stating that he wants more attacking options, and with Lemar having the versatility of playing on either flank, and having been directly involved in 31 Monaco goals last season, his arrival would fill that gap that Mourinho sees – although United’s impressive start to the season may soon dissuade that notion. But with the quality of Lemar potentially available, he would surely want nothing more than to see the French talisman dressed in a United kit and, at just 21, see him become a United hero for years to come.
