Tottenham Hotspur news
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to re-build his squad in the summer.
Toby Alderweireld is set to be the first player sold. The Belgian defender has spent much of the season injured. In addition, Alderweireld is looking for a substantial pay increase that Tottenham are unwilling to sign off on. The centre-back is believed to be on his way to Manchester United as Spurs are once again ready to sell to a direct rival.
Danny Rose expected to join Alderweireld in Manchester as the left-back also wants a pay increase. Like Alderweireld, Rose has been unhappy with Tottenham’s lack of financial commitment to keep him long-term.
If both players are sold, they would become the second and third defenders sold in the last two summers. Tottenham Hotspur sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City in the summer of 2017.
The sales are not expected to stop there as Spurs’ fans must brace for a clear out of more key players. Moussa Dembele, a player many raved about during his Champions League knockout round performance against Juventus, has been earmarked for sale by Pochettino.
Victor Wanyama is also being lined up for a move away from Tottenham. The Guardian reports the two midfielders are wanted by clubs in China.
By selling the four players and raising around £170m, Pochettino hopes to re-invest and re-build a squad that continues to fall just short of winning trophies.
Spurs were the last Premier League team to make a transfer signing in the summer of 2017. It is hoped that the club will complete some of its business much sooner this offseason. The club’s most significant signing was Davinson Sanchez, who has become a valuable player in the heart of Tottenham’s defence.
Tottenham didn’t strengthen their squad enough ahead of the current season. Pochettino must now find players to make Tottenham into trophy contenders.
The good news for Tottenham Hotspur fans is there are no plans to sell Harry Kane, Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen. The three players along with Hugo Lloris are considered off limits when it comes to transfers.
Is Mauricio Pochettino’s plans to sell Alderweireld, Rose, Wanyama and Dembele a bad idea or brilliant move?
