Europa League champions Atletico Madrid have signed goalkeeper Jan Oblak to a new contract. The deal has a €180 million release clause and now thwarts any club’s chances of signing the Slovenian this summer.
Jan Oblak – is he the best goalkeeper in the world?
Oblak had a exceptional 2017-18 season with Atletico. He kept 22 clean sheets, which was the same total of goals Atletico allowed.
Diego Simeone’s side posted a tremendous defensive record and finished second in La Liga behind Barcelona. Oblak arrived from Benfica in 2014 and has been one of the top performers for Atletico ever since. The Spanish club paid just over £14m for Oblak. He is now valued at over £60m.
It was believed Atletico would lose several of their star players this offseason. Reports indicate Antoine Griezmann has agreed a deal with Barcelona. It looks likely that Atletico could face a transfer saga over Griezmann just as Liverpool did over Philippe Coutinho last summer.
Oblak’s commitment means the club will have its defence in order for a title fight next term. Liverpool and Arsenal had been linked with the goalkeeper, but any move away from Atletico now looks impossible.
