So another season is upon us and if you’re a Liverpool fan, it already promises the by now, standard cocktail of highs and lows that we’ve become accustomed to over many seasons.
Jurgen Klopp delivered a deep pre-season schedule, with games of increasing difficulty well aligned with player availability and fitness. While there were some slips, strong performances were seen in several games, notably the two goal win over Barcelona at Wembley Stadium in our penultimate warm up.
The new signings shone, particularly Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic. Mane already looks a live-wire on either wing and his early form delivered goals and assists aplenty, promising lots more for the season ahead. Grujic bagged a couple of goals and showed plenty of potential, despite losing minutes with an injury on the US leg of the tour. The jury is out on our other signings, but I’m inclined to take an optimistic view of Matip, Klavan and Karius on first viewing.
With the season now entering its second month, we can begin to assess potential more clearly.
Our first three games saw four points earned from fine performances at Arsenal and Tottenham, coupled with an unfathomable loss at Burnley. You’d have to say a top four finish remains a reasonable target given the displays in North London, but anything less than two home wins against Leicester and Hull, and a point at Stamford Bridge may see a lowering of expectations towards the end of September.
However the month pans out, it’s unlikely to be boring. Good luck us!
