The trip to Bramall Lane for any League One side is always dressed up to be a big away game, but people forget that Sheffield United are where they are for a reason and maybe shouldn’t be considered a big scalp anymore. They have been the one side flirting with the playoffs for a few seasons now, yet still thousands of fans sacrifice their Saturday afternoon’s highlighting this one on the calendar.
Peterborough have had some great trips to Sheffield over the years with recent late victories and wonder goals to boot so it almost looked written in the stars that this would either be a classic or a damp squib.
Last week we spoke about the, justified, sending off of left back Andrew Hughes for handball which resulted in a suspension for the trip to Sheffield. That meant it was time for Jerome Binnom-Williams (JBW) to step up to the plate, by himself.
Posh boss Grant McCann chose to make some slight tactical amendments to his side and looked to be starting with a narrow diamond leaving JBW somewhat exposed. For the first quarter of an hour he looked like a sporadic candle in the wind and on 13 minutes a right sided Sheffield United cross found Matty Done who duly diverted the ball home from close range.
After the goal the game leveled out somewhat with both teams creating and ‘fluffing’ chances to the dismay of both benches and the 19,000 strong crowd.
Into the second half Posh became the more dominant side especially after the introduction of rocket man, Giwion Edwards, who replaced tiny dancer, Paul Taylor.
Edwards went on to miss possibly one of the best chances of the game with a ‘powder puff’ shot straight at Sheffield United keeper Moore. These were accompanied by attempts from Chris Forrester and Marcus Maddison which on other days could have found the net. It wasn’t to be and Sheffield United held on to their 1-0 victory.
Huge credit to the 958 travelling supporters, it must feel great running forward as a Peterborough player with nearly a thousand Poshies singing your song, unfortunately this time Posh didn’t convert for them.
Finally it is great to see the club already making summer signings! PUFC is often criticised by the paying public for not always exploring other revenue streams. So the announcement of an Elton John gig at The Abax Stadium in June was welcomed by the masses to ensure the Peterborough United circle of life continues. You can find out more at www.theposh.com
