Chelsea defenders have been at the top of their game this season in Fantasy Premier League. Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have all three had strong FPL seasons. But they aren’t the only Chelsea defenders to pop up with solid points returns.
John Terry and David Luiz have also had their moments this term; although neither has had quite the success of the trio of defenders who sit in Chelsea’s top five of FPL points. The Blues have already been crown champions of the Premier League, and selecting their rearguard for the final game of the season could lead fantasy managers to their own league crowns.
FPL gameweek 37 top 5 defenders
Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea
Total FPL points: 168; GW 37: 20 points
A 20 point return in two fixtures spread across gameweek 37 places Azpilicueta third in total points for defenders. It has been an outstanding season for the Spaniard, who has tallied 10, 12 and eight point matches in his last three appearances. The Blues face Sunderland at home to finish the season. If Azpilicueta plays, it should be a good day for fantasy managers.
Kyle Naughton – Swansea
Total FPL points: 80; GW 37: 15 points
It hasn’t been a great fantasy season for Kyle Naughton, but the Swans’ full-back has averaged seven points in his last four gameweeks. Naughton may not be at the level of the Chelsea defenders, but his £4.3 price tag is appealing. Gameweek 38 sees Swansea, who are safe from relegation and unbeaten in four, play West Brom. The Baggies have tanked at the tail end of the season, losing five of their last six matches. In that time, West Brom have scored just once. Naughton should help Swansea keep a clean sheet.
Nathaniel Clyne – Liverpool
Total FPL points: 123; GW 37: 7 points
Nathaniel Clyne makes the FantasySports.co.uk top 5 for the second consecutive week. Clyne is averaging just over six points a game as Liverpool push for Champions League qualification. Liverpool take on relegated Middlesbrough to finish off the term. Clyne tallied 10 points against them in Liverpool’s 3-0 win in gameweek 16.
A win against Middlesbrough guarantees Jurgen Klopp’s side Champions League football. Right now the team are third, but depending on Manchester City’s results, could finish fourth, forcing Liverpool to play in the Champions League playoff-round.
Hector Bellerin – Arsenal
Total FPL points: 106; GW 37: 9 points
Hector Bellerin’s nine point fantasy gameweek 37 was his second best performance this season. The Arsenal full-back is still quite pricey at £6.5, however.
The Gunners take on Sunderland and Everton to close out the season, and could yet make the Champions League. They need Liverpool and/or Manchester City to drop points. Bellerin is expensive, but could be the solution mangers need at the back.
Marcos Alonso – Chelsea
Total FPL points: 175; GW 37: 8 points
Marcos Alonso didn’t play in Chelsea’s Monday night win over Watford, but there is a chance the Spaniard will be selected to play in the Blues’ season finale against Sunderland. Alonso has been brilliant in Antonio Conte’s side as either a wing-back or full-back. Few would have expect Alonso to have the season he has after Chelsea paid Fiorentina £23 million for him last summer. At the time, many saw the transfer fee as far too much. Yet, Alonso has proven his worth to both Chelsea and FPL managers.
Goalkeeper
Lukasz Fabianski – Swansea
Total FPL points: 116; GW 37: 8 points
Swansea are safe, and will need reinforcements to improve ahead of next season to stay in the Premier League. One position that should be secure is goalkeeper as Lukasz Fabianski has put together a quality season. Gameweek 38 has plenty of potential for Fabianski, who faces a West Brom side that has scored one goal in their last six fixtures. Just £4.8 will get the Swansea man in goal.
