Fresh off the back of completing the deal for Nemanja Matic, Manchester United seem to be wasting no time in attempting to sign another midfielder, this time from Spanish giants Barcelona, in the form of Andre Gomes.
Portuguese star Gomes is being considered surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp, with Barcelona having an embarrassment of riches in this area. The announcement that they are willing to let Gomes go has put Mourinho on red alert, especially with Galatasaray pressuring through the purchase of Marouane Fellaini.
At 23, Gomes has already racked up 25 international appearances for Portugal and was part of the squad that claimed Euro 16 glory. He was picked up by Barcelona at the start of last season after impressing with Valencia, where he scored 9 goals in 78 total appearances. He notched up 47 appearances for Barcelona last season, including 8 Champions League games.
Should United look to land Gomes, he is expected to command a fee in the region of £30 million.
United are still hopeful of landing winger Ivan Perisic, whom Mourinho considers top of his most wanted list, but with news that Inter Milan are looking to make him an offer to become the highest paid player at the club, this now seems unlikely to come to fruition. United have also distanced themselves from Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker, with, it seems, United having made enquiries but will likely keep tabs on the player for now.
Manchester United play their final friendly of the summer tomorrow against Sampdoria in Dublin, before they prepare to face up to Real Madrid in the Super Cup next Tuesday.
