Liverpool target Dele Alli as Coutinho replacement

Reds’ fans have taken to the Liverpool Echo in their anger over Philippe Coutinho’s pending £109 million-plus transfer to Barcelona. While the Brazilian is headed out the door, some supporters have called for Liverpool to take the money and immediately spend it on Tottenham’s Dele Alli.

Alli was courted by Liverpool back in 2014, but the deal never materialised for the then-MK Dons player. Alli grew up a Liverpool fan, but the club missed out on signing the rising star, which allowed Tottenham to swoop in for him.

Last year, Alli spoke about his contact with Liverpool before joining Spurs.

“At the time when I was at MK there was contact with Liverpool before I signed for Tottenham, but that was before we’d even spoke to Tottenham,” he said in an interview. “I think it was six months before.

“We went up there and I think they knew that Steven Gerrard was my hero, so they said he was going to come down to meet me, but when I got there he was asleep apparently.

“I think he had a game the next day though, so I understand.”

Liverpool could tempt Spurs by offering the club the same figure they receive for Coutinho. Daniel Levy and Tottenham have shown they will sell players if offered the right amount of cash. The club have previously sold top stars Dimitar Berbatov, Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, and most recently Kyle Walker. Spurs are one of the more financially savvy clubs in England, and with a new stadium being built, it is the perfect time for Liverpool to offer to buy Alli for £100m-plus.

According to the Daily Star, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi would prefer Alli at the Catalan club rather than Coutinho, but it looks like the Spanish team’s deal for the Brazilian will be closed soon.

England international Alli is in high demand, and would be the perfect Liverpool replacement for Coutinho.
