Monaco’s Thomas Lemar was on the cusps of joining Arsenal on transfer deadline day, but the player pulled out of a move at the 11th hour. It is now being reported that Arsenal will again lose out on the play in January as Manchester United will sign Lemar for £92 million.
According to the Sun, Lemar wanted to move to Liverpool, rather than London. However, the Reds were put off by Monaco’s asking price. While Arsene Wenger is set on continuing his pursuit of Lemar in January as the replacement for Alexis Sanchez, Jose Mourinho has plans to intercept Lemar’s signature.
The Mirror has reported that Lemar is interested in a transfer to Manchester United, more so than switching Monaco for North London. Lemar wants to play in the Champions League, which Manchester United and Liverpool are competing in. Rather than a switch to Arsenal, the player was happy to stay at Monaco to continue playing in the top club competition in Europe this term.
Monaco are believed to be a title challenger in France’s Ligue 1. However, the team lost their first match of the season over the weekend, losing to derby rivals Nice, 4-0. If Lemar can be promised a title challenge, to go along with Champions League football, it is believed he will jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford.
In August, it was reported that Manchester United were interested in signing Lemar. However, the club never followed through on the initial reports.
