Liverpool are interested in buying 18-year-old French centre-back Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig, and hope to bring the player to the club in one of the next two transfer windows.
The teenager’s rise to the German Bundesliga has been swift, and Upamecano was playing second division football in Austria just a little over 18 months ago. After impressing with Austrian side Liefering, which is Red Bull Salzburg’s B team, Upamecano was called up to Salzburg in the summer of 2016. He was sold to Germany’s RB Leipzig for nearly £10m in January 2017 after just 16 games with Salzburg.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is said to be a big admirer of the young centre-back, and could move for the player, according to Germany’s Bild.
Klopp has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks due to Liverpool’s poor defensive record. The German manager is looking for ways to improve his team’s leaky defence, and Upamecano could be one way to fix the problems.
However, reports indicate Upamecano is set to sign a new, advanced contract at RB Leipzig. If he does, a €100m release clause is said to be one of the new parts to the new deal that could prevent Liverpool adding the young player.
