Liverpool are reported to be chasing Napoli star defender Faouzi Ghoulam, but will have to go to war with Chelsea to land him.
Algerian international Ghoulam, 26, has not been able to agree a new or extended contract with Napoli, with talks stalling after the amount of a release clause could not be agreed. Napoli wanted the figure to be in region of €30 million, whereas the player, represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, wanted a lower figure of around €18 million.
Liverpool are on the lookout for a quality defender or two to add to their ailing defence, and Ghoulam has been uber consistent at full back for the Italian outfit.
However, they will face stiff competition from Chelsea as their manager, Antonio Conte, is a huge fan of the player, and would be highly interested in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
Much will depend on the preference of Ghoulam, although he has, as yet, expressed no real desire to leave Naples. But the contractual demands will need to be met and resolved soon, or the player will be available on a free in January, which would mean a real clash of the Premier League titans as both Liverpool and Chelsea do battle to bring the player to England.
