In a stunning outburst on Radio 5 Live, TV football pundit and Premier League legend Ian Wright has placed all blame for Liverpool’s stuttering start to the season squarely at the feet of manager Jurgen Klopp and insists he is under pressure.
Liverpool’s win over Huddersfield Town at Anfield on Saturday came as a huge relief to Klopp and his side, on the back of three games without a win and only picking up one win in six games, with two thrashings at the hands of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in amongst those results. They did, however, put seven goals past Maribor and came away with a creditable draw at Spartak Moscow in their Champions League group in the meantime.
But it is primarily their inconsistency in the League which sparked the outburst from Wright – seeing little change from past seasons as Liverpool look to finally capture a Premier League title.
During his interview Wright states : “They’re still making the same mistakes. It’s the same players. Mignolet is making mistakes. Unfortunately for Lovren, he is still making the same mistakes. He [Klopp] is rightly under pressure. He should be under pressure.”
It is hard to disagree with Wright, as Liverpool fans watch their Manchester rivals top the division and seemingly enduring a two horse race for the title, whilst Chelsea and Spurs chase hard and look much better placed to deliver any other challenge. But for all his failings, Klopp retains the adulation and support of the Anfield faithful, where the likes of Brendan Rogers couldn’t.
How long that lasts though remains to be seen, as Liverpool approach a stretch of games where inconsistency could really test that resolve of the Liverpool fans, players, management and Board.
