Newport County replay at Tottenham could net them a fortune

Newport County nearly completed a giant killing on Saturday afternoon when the League Two side met Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup 4th round. Newport led late in the fixture against Spurs, but fell victim to a Harry Kane goal on 82 minutes. The 1-1 result will see the two sides meet again in an FA Cup replay at Wembley. Newport’s FA Cup run could continue with positive result.

It was reported on Sunday that Newport, which makes £2.2 million in annual revenue, could make £700,000 just from its FA Cup run alone this term.

“The players have made me the proudest manager in the country,” Newport manager Mike Flynn said.

“It’s huge. It can save clubs, not just keep you ticking over. I’m hoping it’s on TV again, because that’s an extra bit of money.

“You wouldn’t believe me how much it’s needed. That’s not a sob story, it is what it is in League Two and a lot of League One clubs. It feels we’re in a nice position to be able to provide for the football club.

“We turn over £2.2m a year as a club and a business, and I would say with this cup run it’s going to be in excess of £700,000. It’s huge.

“It allows us to lay foundations for the future and do things right. We’ve got good people running this club and I’m sure they’ll make the right decisions.”

The club were just eight minutes away from its biggest victory in Newport County history. It would have also been the biggest shock of the FA Cup 4th round.

Flynn spoke about his side’s near win and it being Newport’s biggest result of all-time.

“Of course it was. I’d be lying if I said no,” Flynn stated.

“I think because of the finances and how football is now, it would’ve been the best result [in the FA Cup’s history].

“It’s not the highest result [in terms of places between clubs] but it would’ve been the best. We’ve come up against a class team, a class club and a class manager. He was so accommodating, complimentary and I haven’t got enough high words for Mauricio [Pochettino].”

The two clubs will meet again in an FA Cup 4th round replay, but this time it will be at Wembley. Newport have another chance at causing a shocking upset.
