Former Liverpool player Fernando Torres has started a new career chapter. The 34-year-old, who played for Atletico Madrid last term, was officially unveiled by Japanese club Sagan Tosu on Tuesday.
Fernando Torres moves to Japan
Torres, who scored 81 goals in 142 career matches for Liverpool, was officially released by Atletico on June 30. Although he had been tracked by several clubs in Europe, Australia, and North America, Torres decided to sign with Sagan Tosu of Japan’s J1 League. Torres will join former Watford and Roma player Victor Ibarbo as one of two non-Asia foreign players at the club.
The Spanish striker came through the Atletico youth system and made his first-team debut at the age of 17. Torres became the club’s captain at 19-years old and in his first spell at the club, netted 91 times in 244 games.
He moved to Liverpool in 2007 and arguably had the best spell of his career. A move to Chelsea ended in silverware, but Torres failed to rekindle the goalscoring form he showed at Anfield. A move to AC Milan didn’t work out well for the striker before he returned to Atletico in 2015. His second spell at Atletico saw Torres used off the bench more than from the start. However, the striker still managed to score 38 goals in 160 games.
