Leicester City defender Harry Maguire signs new five-year contract

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire has signed a brand-new five-year contract with the club. Maguire had drawn considerable interest from Manchester United last summer following his World Cup performances. However, Manchester United’s lack of spending prevented a deal from happening. Leicester have now tied the centre-back down to a further five years at the King Power Stadium.

Maguire’s new contract will run until 2023. According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, Maguire’s current market value is up to £40.5 million.

After signing his new deal, Maguire spoke about his happiness in dedicating the next five years of his career to Leicester.

“Ever since I came to this club, I’ve always reiterated how good they’ve been to me,” Maguire said.

“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League and built a great platform for me to go and perform at the World Cup, so I thank them a lot. I owe them a lot and I’m looking forward to the future.”

The Sheffield-born Maguire turned professional with Sheffield United in 2011. He made 134 appearances with the Blades. In July 2014, Maguire joined Hull City for £2.5m and spent two of his three seasons with the Tigers playing in the Premier League. Although he did spend much of the 2014-15 season on loan at Wigan.

After Hull’s relegation in 2017, Maguire joined Leicester for £17m. Since arriving, he has not only become a fixture in the team’s defence, but a top defender for the England national team.

“I think the confidence and belief that I can play at this level is the main thing I got from the World Cup and hopefully I can take it now into the future,” Maguire told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It’s been an unbelievable two years or so for myself, but I’m still on a ladder and I still feel like I’m climbing that ladder and want to be more successful.”

Leicester will travel to Bournemouth when the Premier League returns after the international break. The Foxes have secured six points from a possible 12.
