Manchester United have offered midfielder Ander Herrera a new contract, according to Spanish media. Herrera’s contract is set to expire in the summer. However, reports indicate Manchester United will now work to re-sign the player.
Manchester United offer Ander Herrera new contract
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo has claimed the Red Devils are ready to keep Herrera. This news comes despite earlier this week, El Correo reporting Herrera was destined to re-sign with former club Athletic Bilbao. Manchester United have now seemingly completed a U-turn on their initial decision.
Herrera has fought injuries all season. The midfielder has only played 68 total minutes due to an ankle injury. Despite the injury curtailing his season, it had appeared Herrera fell out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho.
Mundo Deportivo claims Herrera will sign his new deal before the January transfer window opens.
The Spaniard arrived at Manchester United in 2014 for £32 million. According to Transfermarkt, Herrera’s value has decreased to £27m currently.
Although reports indicate Manchester United want to keep Herrera, he could be tempted to return to Athletic. The Spanish club attempted to re-sign Herrera during the summer transfer window. However, Manchester United declined to sell the midfielder at the time.
Barcelona and AC Milan have also been interested in adding Herrera, but would only sign him on a free transfer.
In five seasons at Old Trafford, Herrera has played in 164 matches and scored 17 goals. His best season came under manager Louis van Gaal in 2014-15. That season saw Herrera tally eight goals in 31 matches in all competitions.
Several Manchester United players will see their contracts expire at the end of the season. By re-signing Herrera, Manchester United will be able to keep some continuity if a number of players exit.
Herrera is expected to be available for selection following the international break. Manchester United will face joint-league leaders Chelsea when the Premier League resumes.
