Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil has featured 12 times for Arsenal this term scoring three goals. Yet, the German’s influence on the Gunners is at its lowest point since joining from Real Madrid in 2013.
Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil continues to stats decline
Ozil signed a new contract in February 2018, yet nearly one year after putting pen to paper, the attacking midfielder’s impact on Arsenal is waning.
The German’s 2015-16 was his most successful in an Arsenal shirt. Ozil recorded six goals and 19 assists. He scored a career-high 200 Fantasy Premier League points. Since that high mark, Ozil’s FPL points totals have declined.
In 2016-17, Ozil did manage to score eight goals, but his assists regressed. The midfielder created 10 goals in 33 games as he tallied 167 FPL points.
Last season saw another FPL points decline as Ozil tallied 112 points with four goals and nine assists.
Ozil has created just one goal this term from 12 games. Ozil’s 52 points are Arsenal’s fourth highest total. Gameweek 18’s five points against Burnley was Ozil’s best since gameweek 9 versus Leicester. He did miss four straight games during that barren spell. Ozil’s current totals mean he scores or assists a goal every 186 minutes.
The German will cost FPL managers £8 million currently. This season, Ozil started the season at £8.5m but has since decreased.
The midfielder’s current contract has him tied down to the club until 2021. Ozil’s £350,000 per week is a massive wage for the Gunners, especially if Ozil continues to decrease in influence.
For some time, Arsenal fans have seen Ozil as a luxury player. Someone who doesn’t impact every game. When he is on, he can be one of the best players. But when he isn’t on, the whole team can struggle.
Arsenal have a tough run of fixtures upcoming. The Gunners will play Brighton, Liverpool, Fulham, West Ham, and Chelsea in their next five matches. The Gunners are still fifth and only outside the top four on goal difference. Will Ozil play a big part in Arsenal’s holiday period? It remains to be seen as his best return against a top-four team thus far has been just two points.
