Everton host Liverpool on Sunday with the chance to derail their Merseyside Derby rival’s Premier League title hopes. Liverpool go into the derby at Goodison two points behind Manchester City following the Cityzens’ victory over Bournemouth on Saturday. Anything less than a victory for the Reds and Manchester City will end the weekend in first place.
Roberto Firmino fit to face Toffees
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp received a boost heading into the weekend. Striker Roberto Firmino, who suffered an ankle injury against Manchester United last weekend, is set to face Everton.
The Brazilian may only be fit enough to make the bench. Regardless, it is a huge benefit for Klopp especially with the poor form of back-up striker Daniel Sturridge.
Klopp was encouraged by Divock Origi’s play in midweek against Watford. Liverpool defeated the Hornets 5-0 with Origi scoring Liverpool’s third goal.
While Firmino will be back for Liverpool, centre-back Dejan Lovren is still not fit. The defender isn’t expected back until at least Liverpool’s fixture against Burnley.
Marco Silva’s Everton have lost four of their last six matches. They picked up a 3-0 win against Cardiff in midweek giving them confidence ahead of the Merseyside Derby.
Everton will welcome back Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma to the team. Both defenders will be options for Silva.
The Toffees have not defeated Liverpool since 2010. They win was a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park. The Reds were in a transition phase at the time with Fenway Sports Group just taking over the club.
Everton have gone 18 games without a win against Liverpool in all competitions following that victory.
