Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson scored an unbelievable 213 Fantasy Premier League points in 2018-19. It was a massive 102 points better than his previous FPL season. Robertson’s combination of 12 assists and 21 clean sheets led him to a brilliant finish.
However, Robertson’s first match of the 2019-20 season saw the full-back score just two FPL points as Liverpool defeated Norwich City, 4-1.
Over 1.9 million FPL managers selected Robertson for gameweek 1. However, plenty of managers have decided against retaining Robertson for gameweek 2.
Robertson has been transferred out of 106,527 FPL teams as of this writing for gameweek 2. A lot of FPL managers have given up on the defender, which has made him the most transferred out defender in FPL this week. Why are so many managers giving up on Robertson already?
Liverpool play against Southampton on Saturday which comes three days after their UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea. Robertson started for the Reds against Chelsea, and despite playing in the Community Shield, gameweek 1, and the UEFA Super Cup, there is little doubt that Robertson will start against Southampton. Or is it?
Last season, Robertson was a part of Liverpool’s 3-0 home win against Southampton picking up points for a clean sheet and playing a full 90 minutes. He again played 90 minutes against the Saints in Liverpool’s 3-1 come from behind win in the second half of the season.
Unfortunately, Robertson picked up a yellow card. The full-back’s yellow card was just one of four he received in 3,219 minutes of Premier League football.
Could Andy Robertson sit out gameweek 2?
Jurgen Klopp could be influenced to rest Robertson against Southampton due to Liverpool’s midweek match against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup. The teams played 120 minutes with the Reds winning 5-4 on penalties.
The Reds flew some 3,000 miles round trip to Istanbul and back to Merseyside. Liverpool’s players were pushed for 120 minutes against Chelsea on Wednesday night. The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho looked to be struggling with cramps at the end of the match.
Robertson still looked capable of making his trademark slaloming runs down the left flank, just a bit slower than normal. Klopp could start James Milner in Robertson’s place. However, he could try to keep as many first-team players in the starting XI as possible.
Andy Robertson alternatives for gameweek 2
If you are not sold on Robertson for gameweek 2, then which players would be an alternative to the Liverpool full-back?
Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles tallied 12 points in gameweek 1. The defender will play against Burnley on Saturday at the Emirates. At just £5 million, Maitland-Niles could be a value purchase for an FPL squad.
Everton’s Michael Keane is another Robertson alternative for gameweek 2. He tallied eight points last week against Crystal Palace. Everton have a winnable set of fixtures upcoming with Watford up first at Goodison Park. Keane costs £5.5m and is coming off of his best FPL season in 2018-19 with 129 points.
Andy Robertson is still one of the best full-backs in FPL. He may have scored just two points in gameweek 1, but he will come good as the season goes on.
