According to reports from Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho has placed Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane at the top of his transfer list for the remainder of the summer window.
With 12 days to go in the summer transfer market, Mourinho hopes to land a fourth signing, and his preferred player is Varane. Although Mourinho is very high on the defender, the Manchester Evening News state a deal is “highly unlikely” as Varane is a key component of Real Madrid’s success. Reports of Manchester United targeting Varane has been rubbished by others in the British media as the initial report was made by Spain’s Don Balon, a very controversial outlet that has proven unreliable in the past.
Manchester United would need to move on one of their four current centre-backs, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones or Eric Bailly to offer Varane a regular place. Lindelof and Bailly just arrived at the club in the last two summer transfer windows, therefore, neither player will be on the move. Smalling and Jones had been linked with moves away from Old Trafford in the past, with Smalling seemingly being the most likely to be headed for the exit at the club.
Although Varane may not be headed to Old Trafford, reports still suggest Mourinho could make an attempt to sign Gareth Bale.
