Is Luke Shaw on his way back to Southampton?

Former Southampton full back Luke Shaw’s Manchester United career is under more pressure, and should he fail to establish himself at Old Trafford, he could look to beat a hasty retreat back to St Mary’s Stadium.

Although United opted to extend Shaw’s contract to prevent him becoming a free agent, Shaw’s struggles continue, and he has only featured in one game for the Red Devils first team this season – their facile thumping of Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup.

Indeed, Shaw was roundly criticised for his showing in the United Under-23 team in their game against West Ham United which was shown on their club TV channel. United continue to be linked with left backs – including Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and, most notably, Tottenham’s Danny Rose.

Should Shaw ultimately fail at United, he could look to go back to the club where he made his name, and left on very positive terms, with him being described as a being ‘like a son’ to then manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is widely lauded as the one who really developed Shaw, despite him breaking through under Nigel Adkins.

At 23, many would feel that a return ‘home’ for Shaw would be the perfect place for him to rebuild his career and reputation that saw him attract the likes of Manchester United in the first place. He has been unlucky with injuries it is true, but it feels that Shaw has never truly settled down and relaxed fully at Old Trafford – whereas at St Mary’s, and feeling the full warmth and support of the Saints fans, in a side that is highly progressive and competitive in the Premier League, he should once again recapture the form that made him so popular with the Southampton die hards initially.
