Paul Pogba missed Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Liverpool on Saturday. The midfielder was left out of the squad which raised questions from many who watched the fixture. Pogba has been linked with a possible move away from Old Trafford due to a rumoured rift between he and Jose Mourinho. The players absence has now fuelled new rumours of unhappiness at Old Trafford.
Despite being left out of the squad, it was reported that Pogba suffered an injury Friday’s training session. The injury – a gash on his thigh – prevented Mourinho from fielding the Frenchman.
Pogba is expected to return to the Manchester United team for Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 second leg match against Sevilla. The player didn’t start against Sevilla in the first leg, however, Pogba did come on for the injured Ander Herrera in the first half.
Mourinho announced the absence of the Frenchman ahead of kickoff against Liverpool as he fielded Juan Mata in place of the Frenchman. Speaking Sky Sports, Mourinho revealed the news to the surprise of many.
“He is injured. [It happened] yesterday in training, an unlucky situation, and he is out. I don’t know how long he is out for,” Mourinho said.
The manager also spoke about why he selected Mata to play in Pogba’s place.
“I trust his experience. I trust his capacity to move into areas where he can connect our game because he is intelligent. Liverpool is a strong team on the counter-attack and in transition,” Mourinho stated.
After Manchester United’s win, Pogba walked into Mourinho’s post-match interview and congratulated his manager. Rumours continue to swirl that the Frenchman is plotting a move away from the club.
Manchester United’s win puts them five points ahead of Liverpool in the race for second place this term.
