Jose Mourinho’s No. 2 Rui Faria is set to leave Manchester United this summer. Faria has managed alongside Mourinho for the last 17 years and his loss could be a major loss for the Red Devils’ manager.
Faria has worked with Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale, Real Madrid and Manchester United. However, after nearly two decades together, Faria has said it is time for him to step away from working with Mourinho.
“After a lot of consideration and with a very heavy heart I have decided the time is right to move on,” Faria wrote in a statement release via Manchester United’s website. “I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences. However, I have felt for some time I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.
“My heartfelt thanks go to José Mourinho for the belief he had in me all those years ago when it all was just a student dream. I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship.”
After the announcement, Mourinho also spoke about Faria’s departure.
“Seventeen years… in Leiria, Porto, London, Milan, Madrid, London again and Manchester,” Mourinho said. “Training, playing, travelling, studying, laughing and also a few tears of happiness. Seventeen years and the kid is now a man. The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager.
“I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me but his happiness is more important and I respect his decision, especially because I know we will always be together. Be happy, brother!”
How will Rui Faria leaving affect Mourinho?
Faria’s departure will leave Mourinho without a vital figure and confidant. The assistant coach has long supported Mourinho and allied with him even when times looked bleak at Chelsea and Real Madrid. According to reports, Faria will take some time away from football before taking up a position and new challenge.
Michael Carrick will join Mourinho’s staff after this season. Rene Muelensteen is believed to be on his way to Old Trafford and could become Mourinho’s new No. 2.
