Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot has returned to first-team training. The summer arrival from Porto had suffered a knee injury and undergone surgery to repair the problem. He has now boosted Jose Mourinho’s preseason squad for Saturday’s International Champions Cup matches versus Liverpool.
Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot returns to training after knee surgery
Dalot is one of the most highly rated full-backs in Europe. The 19-year-old was purchased from Porto in June for £19 million. Due to his knee injury, Dalot has only recently been able to train with the Red Devils.
Mourinho took Dalot with the squad to the United States to help integrate him into the squad. It looks like he could make his Manchester United preseason debut soon. Dalot officially announced he was training with the Red Devils on Friday via his Instagram account.
Are the Red Devils in crisis despite Diogo Dalot return?
Manchester United are set for a defensive crisis ahead of their Premier League season’s kick off. Antonio Valencia is expected to start against Leicester City right-back while the other full-back position is still up in the air.
The club is expected to part ways with Matteo Darmian. The Italian has announced he is ready to leave the Old Trafford. Manchester United could also cash-in on Marco Rojo who has been told he is surplus to requirement.
Mourinho has called for Ashley Young to return to action despite being on holiday following the World Cup.
Dalot’s return gives Mourinho more options in defence. However, it may be some time before he is fully fit following surgery.
The Red Devils play Liverpool on Saturday in the International Champions Cup. The match will be played at Michigan Stadium on the campus of Michigan University. In 2014, Manchester United and Real Madrid attracted over 109,000 fans to their preseason match at “The Big House”.
