Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku hasn’t found the back of the net in his last seven Premier League games. Gameweek 5 against Watford was the last time Lukaku scored. He has played sparingly in recent gameweeks for manager Jose Mourinho. However, Lukaku could be set for a goalscoring breakout against Southampton in gameweek 14.
Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku to score goals in GW 14
Lukaku’s best Fantasy Premier League gameweek came all the way back in gameweek 4 against Burnley. The striker scored twice as the Red Devils won handily.
The Belgian has gained quite the reputation as a flat-track bully. This season has seen Lukaku unable to score against the Premier League’s best teams as he scored a combined eight FPL points against Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City. That’s just 2.67 points against the big sides.
Manchester United have the fortune of playing Southampton in gameweek 14. Mark Hughes’ team is 18th in the Premier League and has allowed 24 goals. Southampton have recorded the fewest wins this term (one) and give Manchester United the chance to kick-start their season.
Lukaku has scored six goals in nine career matches against Southampton. It is his joint-fourth best total against opposing teams. His history against the Saints and their poor defensive form could allow Lukaku to break out of the goalscoring drought he finds himself in.
The Belgian costs a season-low of £10.7 million in FPL. Managers continue to transfer the player out of their teams. He was still selected by 262,923 for gameweek 13. Many of those selections were made with hope Lukaku would score once more. If the striker does find the back of the net against the Saints — and I think he will — then those FPL managers who stuck with him will look like geniuses.
Manchester United are winless in their last two Premier League games. They have scored just one goal since beating Bournemouth in gameweek 11. Mourinho should turn back to Lukaku this weekend as Manchester United go searching for goals.
