Having spent more money on defence than most countries do, Manchester City are set again to add another defender to their ranks, with the reports that they have put a deal in place to bring American wonder kid Erik Palmer-Brown to the Etihad Stadium in January 2018.
Palmer-Brown, 20, currently plies his trade in the American MLS League, playing for the Sporting Kansas City franchise. He captained the USA Under 20 international team that made the quarter finals of the U20 World Cup earlier this summer.
But, despite having spent over £200 million on defenders over recent seasons, City still feel a four and a half year contract is warranted for Palmer-Brown, and have beaten the likes of PSG, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven to clinch the players signature.
Although Palmer-Brown is touted as one of the most promising youngsters in world football, he is not a regular starter for Kansas City, and indeed has only made 16 appearances for his home club since 2013. He was loaned out to Porto ‘B’ last season, playing in central defence as he helped them win the LigaPro title.
How City will develop the player and bring him through remains to be seen – it is distinctly possible they will look to loan him out to a club playing in the Championship as he looks to get used to the blood and thunder of British football, before considering him for first team action. Whether he can replace some of the worlds most expensive defenders though remains a huge point for debate, and makes you wonder whether this step is the right one for the player, if not Manchester City.
