Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been injured again, according to reports following Manchester City’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over West Brom on Wednesday night.
The continually injured Gundogan was returning to action after missing around nine months of football due to a knee ligament injury. Gundogan hadn’t featured for Manchester City since October 2016, and limped off after a tackle from West Brom’s Claudio Yacob. Despite manager Pep Guardiola being wishful the midfielder’s injury isn’t serious, Gundogan’s past record doesn’t leave a lot of hope for a quick recovery.
Gundogan has played just 18 times for Manchester City since arriving from Borussia Dortmund for £24.3 million in the summer of 2016. Even when Guardiola signed him from the Bundesliga team, Gundogan was nursing an injury that forced him to miss 10 games between the two sides.
Following Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup win, Guardiola spoke to the press about the midfielder’s latest injury.
“I think not serious, it’s not eight months, but a little injury. Unfortunately the action was tough. He will be back soon hopefully,” Guardiola said.
“Tomorrow he will take a test to see exactly what it is. The physio and doctor told me it’s not big issue.
“I suffered for Gundogan, when he was on the grass, in that moment. You cannot imagine what it’s like for eight months, every day alone or just with the physio not in the locker room.
“In that moment it was so tough but of course that’s football. He was okay, he had a little bit of pain in his knee but tomorrow we are going to see and clarify what it is.”
On Thursday morning it was reported Gundogan will “be back soon”, although there were no specific details given on how many games he will miss this time. The good news for Manchester City was the player walked off the pitch at the The Hawthorns under his on power.
Has Ilkay Gundogan been a disappointment since joining Manchester City? Have your say.
