Tottenham were defeated by Manchester United, 1-0, Saturday thanks to an Anthony Martial goal. Spurs gave up the goal in the 81st minute as the club lost for the second time this term. Former Tottenham player Jamie Redknapp was critical of Spurs following the defeat.
Jamie Redknapp on Tottenham loss
Redknapp felt Spurs should have challenged Manchester United’s defence far more than they did during the match. The former player believes it is Tottenham’s inability to challenge defences that are preventing them from winning the Premier League.
“They were a little bit ‘tippy-tappy’ at times,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“There were times when they could have got at the United back four, but elected to go back and play safe.
“I still feel they haven’t got the personality to win these types of games yet.”
Harry Kane a big loss
Tottenham were missing star striker Harry Kane during Saturday’s match. Kane was ruled out injured following Tottenham’s win over Liverpool the week prior.
Kane’s absence was apparent during the game as Spurs couldn’t make the breakthrough despite out shooting Manchester United 13-11. But Redknapp doesn’t feel the striker’s absence was completely to blame for the loss.
“But you’re missing the point if you think Kane’s absence is the problem,” Redknapp said.
“This has been a feature in so many of Spurs’ games against the top six.
“There are so many games where he [Kane] has played, and Spurs lack the personality that I’m talking about.
“They’ve not been good enough. Not just today, it’s too regular.
“If they want to get there, they have to make that change. Otherwise it will be the same old story.”
Tottenham are now eight points back of leaders Manchester City.
