Jose Mourinho has criticised Manchester United supporters ahead of the Red Devils’ vital Premier League clash with Liverpool. The Portuguese manager has called fans’ support of the club into question has the match looms this weekend.
The two rivals will play on Saturday at lunchtime. Both clubs are fighting for second place in the Premier League with a mere two points separating them.
Mourinho’s criticism of Manchester United supporters isn’t new. The manager has already attacked fans for their lack of emotion and energy at Old Trafford his season.
“I think (Liverpool and United) both want to finish top four but we both want to finish second, so I think it is a big game, and then Seville knockout and Brighton knockout so we have three matches at Old Trafford,” Mourinho told MUTV.
“If possible, (we should) give some tickets to the United fans that were (at Selhurst Park).”
Despite Mourinho’s criticism, supporters have seen the team win 19 of 29 matches this term. Manchester United are two points ahead of Liverpool and four ahead of fourth place Tottenham.
“I remember Portsmouth – such a small stadium, the atmosphere was absolutely incredible,” Mourinho said.
“In here, the atmosphere is a bit quiet and there is not very (much enthusiasm). But the players like to play at home.”
Manchester United supporters shouldn’t expect goals
Manchester United are winless versus Liverpool in their last five matches in all competitions. Earlier this season, the two sides finished 0-0 at Anfield.
Manchester United have scored jut three times in the last six meetings between the teams in all competitions. With a lack of goals against the Reds, Mourinho is under increasing pressure to attack Liverpool’s defence. Mourinho was lambasted for a defensive approach versus Liverpool earlier this term. There is a high possibility that Mourinho will once again paddock the door and play defensive against the Reds.
If Mourinho does play it defensive, win, lose or draw, Manchester United supporters may feel the manager has let Liverpool off the hook.
