Stoke terminates contract of manager Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes became the seventh Premier League manager to be sacked since the start of the Premier League season. Stoke confirmed the manager’s contract was terminated following Stoke’s 2-1 FA Cup loss to Coventry on Saturday.

Hughes’ job as Stoke manager was increasingly under pressure. The Potters currently sit 18th in the Premier League. The team is one point away from safety, but based on form, Stoke have been struggling for some time. Stoke have lost six of their last seven Premier League fixtures. The team has won just five times this term.

Following the team’s decision to sack Hughes, the club released an official statement via Twitter.

“Stoke City can confirm that the contract of manager Mark Hughes has been terminated with immediate effect,” the statement read.

“We would like to thank Mark for all he has achieved for the club over the last four and a half years, notably in guiding us to three successive ninth places finishes in the Premier League, and we wish him every success for the future.

“The club will look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible and will be making no further comment at this time.”

The Birmingham Mail has reported that former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and Manchester United player Ryan Giggs are two of the front-runners to take over as manager at Stoke.

Hughes won 71 of his 200 games in charge of the club. He leaves with a 35.5 winning percentage. In comparison, former Stoke manager Tony Pulis recorded a 36.6 winning rate.

Fans have taken to Twitter following Hughes’ sacking. Many believe the manager had it coming after a poor run this term.
