Philippe Coutinho staying at Liverpool, Angel Di Maria to Barcelona

According to ESPN, Paris Saint-Germain are on the verge of selling Angel Di Maria to Barcelona for €50 million. PSG are attempting to make financial room for the pending transfer of Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe while Di Maria is being seen as an alternative to Philippe Coutinho.

The move for Di Maria will excite Liverpool fans as it appears the Catalan side will lose out on signing Coutinho. Although the Daily Star reports Barcelona will hold final transfer talks with Liverpool Thursday night for Coutinho’s signature, it appears the Reds will continue to stand firm on the Brazilian.

ESPN reports Barcelona’s move for Di Maria is part of the club’s attempt to keep Lionel Messi at the club. Messi’s contract is in its final year, and having Di Maria at the club could convince the playmaker to remain at the Camp Nou.

The real winner in Di Maria’s move to Barcelona will be Liverpool as the Reds have been embroiled in the never-ending transfer saga for the last four weeks.

After Liverpool’s Premier League week 2 win over Crystal Palace, manager Jurgen Klopp spoke about Coutinho’s future with the club.

“It is the decision of the club, I think there is no doubt about that,” Klopp said.

“It’s not my decision, I’m the manager of the football team so when players are available, I coach them, and that is how it is.

“At the moment Phil is not available, but you can imagine missing Philippe Coutinho would be a big blow for each team in the world, so it is for us.

“But it’s the situation so I cannot change it, and whatever I would say cannot change it.”

Angel Di Maria’s move to Barcelona will not only help PSG to sign Mbappe, but it will give the club some much needed wiggle room in terms of Financial Fair Play. PSG are expected to sell Julian Draxler as well. The club have already offloaded winger Jese to Stoke City this summer.
