Manchester City kicked off their American tour with a 1-0 loss to Germany’s Borussia Dortmund on Friday night. Despite the loss (courtesy of a Dortmund penalty in the 28th minute), manager Pep Guardiola had plenty to be happy with after the friendly. Seventeen-year-old centre-back Eric Garcia was one player to receive positive reviews following the fixture. His play has prompted some fans to express delight over his future at the club.
Could teen sensation Eric Garcia be the club’s defensive answer?
The youngster’s aggressive defensive style was compared to teammate Nicolas Otamendi following the match. He also showed an ability to distribute the ball from the back, which impressed supporters on hand at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Although still just a prospect at 17, Garcia looks likely to be Manchester City’s next top prospect brought into the first team. In addition, his youth makes him likely to be at the Etihad Stadium for years to come.
Garcia joined Manchester City’s youth program in 2017 from Barcelona. This summer he was moved up to Manchester City’s under-23 squad. The centre-back is currently under contract until 2022.
Last season playing in the U-18 Premier League for Manchester City, Garcia appeared in 19 games and scored four goals. He also featured in the UEFA Youth League and the Premier League 2.
Garcia has played in the Spain U-17 squad since May 2017. He is the team’s captain and has played 10 times and scored two goals.
Manchester City fans shouldn’t just be excited about Garcia’s defending as his goal-scoring ability on set pieces has been tremendous.
Eric Garcia from Barcelona to Man City
Garcia joined Manchester City in July 2017 for £1.3 million. Upon his arrival, he was called ‘the jewel of La Masia’. Thanks to Manchester City’s £200 million youth centre, it is believed Garcia was attracted to the club. Guardiola had personally scouted the player and led the English side to pay Garcia’s release clause.
