Jose Mourinho and Manchester United will save around £91 million by purchasing Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann in January 2018.
The player had the opportunity to sign for the Red Devils during the summer transfer window, but Griezmann elected to remain with Atletico for, at least, the first half of the season.
Griezmann’s release clause was set at £183.14 million during the summer, an astronomical fee if Manchester United had purchased the Frenchman. However, Griezmann’s previous contract extension expired at the end of August, which allowed his high release clause to be cut in half.
According to the Sun, Barcelona are also interested in landing Griezmann in January after the club lost out on Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho. Due to the expense of triggering Griezmann and signing him to a long-term contract, Mourinho decided to focus on other players during the summer, however, he could be ready to trigger the player’s release clause in the winter.
After three Premier League matches Manchester United haven’t shown any need for Griezmann, and the Red Devils could decide to pass on the player in January. Reports indicate that Manchester United will pass on the Frenchman due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic now being re-signed.
Griezmann has started the La Liga season slowly for Atletico. The forward has played just 67 minutes in 2017-18.
