premier league, fantasy football, fpl, fantasy sports

Gameweek 19 defenders have little time to rest following the Boxing Day fixtures. But your Fantasy Premier League team needs to have a sturdy back line or you’re losing points.

The best of the best in gameweek 19 defenders have been performing all season – or most of it. So, it isn’t a big stretch when it comes to the players that make up this week’s list.

Let’s take a look at FantasySports.co.uk’s gameweek 19 defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea

Games: 18; Clean sheets: 11; Total FPL points: 95

Cesar Azpilicueta continues to tally points week in and week out. The Chelsea man leads all defenders in total points and a six point haul against Hull continues to show his importance as an FPL player.

The defender is still only £6.5 million to get in your team, so what are you waiting for in gameweek 19 defenders?

Laurent Koscielny – Arsenal

Games: 17; Clean sheets: 5; Total FPL points: 71

It would be simple just to select Chelsea players as your gameweek 19 defenders. But where is the fun in that? And if things go south for Chelsea, you’re out of points. So, let’s diversify our gameweek 19 defender selections.

Laurent Koscielny had his best game in weeks when Arsenal beat West Brom 1-0 on Boxing Day. After a great start to the season Koscielny averaged 1.4 points per match over his eight games prior to Boxing Day.

Arsenal’s next five fixtures should allow for the Koscielny and company to gain points: Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Swansea, Burney and Watford.

Winston Reid – West Ham

Games: 15; Clean sheets: 5; Total FPL points: 68

Winston Reid is in-form and ready to be picked as one of your FPL gameweek 19 defenders. Reid has shown his form isn’t a flash in the pan.

Boxing Day’s 11 point tally was aided by his second goal of the season as West Ham destroyed Swansea.

Reid is averaging nine points in his last three FPL gameweeks. A selection in gameweek 19 against Leicester is a great decision, but gameweek 20 sees the Hammers take on Manchester United, which will be time to bench him.

Gary Cahill – Chelsea

Games: 18; Clean sheets: 11; Total FPL points: 89

Your gameweek 19 defenders needs Gary Cahill in it. Averaging 7.3 points per game, in his last four, Cahill is solid and dependable at the back.

Chelsea have Stoke up next, another clean sheet in the waiting. However, gameweek 20 will see them go to Tottenham. With the Blues’ current form, don’t expect Spurs to beat them.

Seamus Coleman – Everton

Games: 15; Clean sheets: 3; Total FPL points: 58

Now for something different. Seamus Coleman has gone under our FPL radar for much of the season. Coleman has popped up occasionally with the excellent points haul.

But overall, Coleman has lacked consistency to warrant a spot in a our defenders list.

For gameweek 19 defenders, we think Coleman is a great choice. The Everton man is coming off a six point tally against Leicester City, and is averaging five points over his last three FPL games.

Everton face bottom of the Premier League Hull in gameweek 19. It is a perfect time to select Coleman.

Bonus goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois – Chelsea

Games: 18; Clean sheets: 11; Total FPL points: 83

Ok, we got it wrong last week with are pick of Simon Mignolet. We admit it. So, this week we are playing it safe with Thibaut Courtois.

The goalkeeper has kept 11 clean sheets and is the backbone to Chelsea’s phenomenal team under Antonio Conte.

Play it safe and add Courtois to your FPL gameweek 19 defenders.
